Nativity cribs from around the world reflect the local cultures and artistic traditions that interpret the story of Jesus’ birth. Each unique interpretation captures both the universal message of the Nativity and the rich diversity of global craftsmanship and faith.
This beautiful collection was mostly curated by Fr Adrian Farrelly O.P. during his extensive works and missionary travels around the globe. Fr Adrian has been collecting Cribs from Around The World for over 40 years and I am sure you will agree that he has a wonderful collection. St Martin Apostolate have added a few Cribs here and there.
As you will see when you visit this collection of cribs here in The Moving Crib, we have an incredibly diverse collection of Cribs. Some of the more unusual cribs include a Crib which was placed inside a Duck Egg from Vietnam, or the traditional Slovakian Crib made from Corn Cob Husks. In addition, one of the cutest ones is the clay crib that fits inside a matchbox – from Peru (the birthplace of St Martin).
Peru – The Home of St Martin – These are traditional crib figurines from Peru – made from clay and modeled and painted as indigenous rural people would be dressed. Normally these cribs would include local animals such as Alpaca & Lama. Ponchos are still worn in rural settings.
We plan to refurbish the entire Moving Crib in 2026 and we could use your help in achieving this – if you would like to help, please click the Donate Button above and give us a little hand with this mammoth task!
In Italy, elaborate Presepi often include entire village scenes with detailed figurines made of terracotta or wood. In Mexico, vibrant Nacimientos feature colorful clay figures and may incorporate native animals like llamas or jaguars. In Poland, ornate Szopki combine the Nativity with miniature models of Kraków’s architecture, shimmering with foil and bright colors.
African Nativity sets are often hand-carved from local woods, with figures dressed in traditional attire, while in the Philippines, the Belen is a central Christmas decoration displayed in homes and public spaces. Our Tanzanian Crib are very special pieces of sculpture made by Makonde Craftspeople of Southern Tanzania.
If you have an unusual nativity set from some far-flung land and would like to donate it for our display, we would be delighted to add it to our collection – call us on (01) 874 5465 or email info@stmartin.ie – Thanks.
As you can see from our collection, Cribs come in many forms and can be very simple just including Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to the more elaborate incorporating Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, three wise men, a shepherd, an angel, a shepherd boy and many animals inside a manger.
