A lot of people quietly ask this question at some point in life. Not “Do I believe in God?” but something more personal: “Why does my faith feel weak sometimes?” or “How do I actually grow closer to God?” If you have ever felt that you are not alone. Faith is not something most people feel strong in all the time. It grows, it shifts, and sometimes it even feels like it goes quiet for a while. The good news is that faith is not something you either “have” or “do not have.” In the Catholic understanding, it is something that can grow over time, like a relationship.
Start with honesty, not perfection!
One of the most important parts of growing faith is simply being honest with God. You do not need perfect words or strong feelings. You do not need to pretend everything is fine. Sometimes the most real prayer is very simple: “God, I want to believe, but I am struggling right now.” That kind of honesty is already prayer.
Prayer is less about performance, more about presence.
People sometimes think prayer has to feel deep or structured for it to “count.” But in reality, prayer is mainly about relationship. It can be quiet. It can be messy. It can be as simple as talking to God in your own words during a walk, a commute, or a difficult moment. The key is consistency, not perfection. Like any relationship, it grows through time and attention.
Stay close to the basics.
In the Catholic tradition, faith is strengthened through simple, steady practices. This can include attending Mass, even when it feels routine. It can include reading a small part of Scripture regularly. It can also include moments of silence, where you simply pause and become aware of God’s presence. These practices might not always feel dramatic, but over time they shape the heart.
Faith often grows through difficulty.
It is worth saying clearly that faith does not only grow in peaceful moments. Many people discover that their deepest growth happens during seasons of uncertainty, loss, or struggle. This is not because suffering is good in itself, but because it can strip away distractions and force us to look for God in a more real way. Faith that survives difficulty often becomes more grounded and more honest.
You are not meant to do it alone.
In the Catholic view, faith is never just an individual project. Being part of a community matters. That can mean going to Mass, talking with others who believe, or simply staying connected even when you feel distant. Other people’s faith can help support yours when it feels weak.
Be patient with the process.
Faith rarely grows in a straight line. There are moments of clarity and moments of confusion. Times when God feels close and times when He feels distant. That does not mean nothing is happening. Growth often takes place quietly, even when it is not obvious. Think of it less like a sudden change and more like something slowly deepening over time.
Final thought
Strengthening faith is not about becoming perfect or always feeling certain. It is about staying open, staying honest, and continuing to turn toward God even in small ways. From a Catholic perspective, faith grows the way relationships grow. Through time, trust, patience, and presence. And even when it feels weak, the very desire to grow in faith is already a sign that something is alive within it.
Continue Growing in Faith
If you would like to continue reflecting on what it means to grow in faith, we invite you to watch the Gospel reflection below from our YouTube channel.
In The Way Back to God Is Through Love, we reflect on Matthew 10:34–11:1, where Jesus reminds us that faith is more than something we believe—it is something we live. As our love for God grows, it is reflected in the way we love and serve others through our everyday words and actions.
Our YouTube channel also features regular Gospel reflections and a live-streamed 1:00 pm Mass every Monday to Friday, helping you stay connected in prayer and deepen your relationship with Christ wherever you are.
We hope this reflection encourages you to keep taking small, faithful steps towards God, trusting that He is always drawing you closer through His love.
